Effexor61 of any two indicators are linearly related to a high degree of precision, the * value can be obtained by equation 3-5, this equation holds for all non-hydrogen bond donor solvents and up to the gas phase. Demonstrate that the reductions in fracture incidence observed are largely restricted to the patients with the lowest BMD values, in particular those who fulfil the WHO definition of osteoporosis of a BMD T-score -2.5. It appears that the changes in BMD during treatment explain only part of the observed antifracture efficacy of treatments, and that the normalisation of the rate of bone turnover may be the principal factor in the success of therapies. Now researchers have discovered why. They showed, for the first time, that apoE directly promotes the development of neuritic plaques in the brain. These plaques, which contain damaged nerve cell connections, are a hallmark of the disease. The researchers also discovered that apoE4 - the high-risk version of apoE - does far more damage than apoE3. These findings, made with a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease that expresses human proteins, were reported in the March 14, 2000, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. David M. Holtzman, MD, an associate professor of neurology and of molecular biology and pharmacology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, is lead author of the paper. Holtzman's group collaborated with Steven M. Paul, MD, and Kelly R. Bales at the Lilly Research Laboratories of Eli Lilly and Company "Apolipoprotein E isoform-dependent amyloid deposition and neuritic degeneration in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease, " PNAS, March 14, 2000 ; . The brains of Alzheimer patients are dotted with deposits of amyloid-beta, a protein fragment of unknown function. Amyloid-beta normally is found at low levels in bodily fluids. In the mouse studies, the researchers found that amyloid deposits by themselves didn't damage the brain. But when apoE was present, the amyloid formed into hair-shaped fibrils, and neuritic plaques containing the "arms" of damaged nerve cells appeared. Moreover, mice that made both human amyloid-beta and human apoE4 produced more amyloid-beta and had 10 times as many fibrillar amyloid-beta deposits in a key part of the brain as those that made human amyloid-beta and human apoE3. The amyloid fibrils always were associated with neuritic plaques. "To me, these results strongly suggest that the main reason that apoE4 is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease is because it interacts with amyloid-beta protein and enables it to become fibrillar, which in turn promotes neurodegeneration, " Holtzman says. Paul and Bales previously had studied mice that overproduce the human protein that is cleaved into amyloid-beta. They found that apoE played an important role in both the deposition of amyloid-beta and its conversion to a fibrillar form. In the present study, Holtzman's and Paul's groups showed that mice that produce apoE develop not only fibrillar amyloid but also numerous neuritic plaques in the hippocampus and neocortex of the brain by the time they are 12 months old. The hippocampus is involved in memory, and the neocortex performs many cognitive functions. By using a chemical that stains only fibrillar amyloid, the researchers determined that brain cells were damaged only where the amyloid took the form of fibrils. They then studied mice that made human amyloid-beta but not mouse apoE. These animals deposited significant amounts of amyloid-beta in the hippocampus, but they developed few or no neuritic plaques, even by 15. ULTRASTRUCTURE OF A MICROSPORIDIUM BRACHIOLA GAMBIAE N. SP. PARASITISING A MOSQUITO ANOPHELES GAMBIAE, A MALARIA VECTOR Weiser J., Zizka Z. * Insect Pathology, Institute of Entomology, Academy of Sciences, 370 05 Cesk Budjovice, Czech Republic; * Electron Microscopy, Institute of Microbiology, Academy of Sciences, 142 20 Praha , Czech Republic In 1959 Fox and Weiser published the case of a Nosema identified at that time as Nosema stegomyiae, isolated from rearings of Anopheles gambiae in Liberia, preventing development of malaria parasite in infected mosquitoes. The microsporidian caused destructive epizooties in mosquito rearings in the insectary. This parasite reduced susceptivity of the mosquito to development of malaria parasites and their transmission to man. It infects most tissues of adult male and female no larvae ; mosquitoes, destroying the midgut, Malpighian tubules, the fat body, muscles, hypoderm and connective tissues. We used this old material in Canada balsam for study in electron microscope. Slides were opened, the balsam was removed and sections were transferred into alcohol and water. The sections were closed in 2% agar, refixed in 2% glutaraldehyde in cacodylate buffer, postfixed in 1% osmium tetroxide, washed in buffer and dehydrated in alcohol. The material was embedded in Epon and ultrathin sections were contrasted in uranyl acetate and lead citrate and inspected in a Philips CM 100 electron microscope Kodak electron microscope films 4489 ; . In the re-fixed and stained ultrathin sections we found stages of the end of schizogony, early and late sporonts and mature spores. The diplokaryotic schizont is closed in a fine continuous smooth membrane of electron dense plasmalemma. The outer surface of the plasmalemma is covered by a thin layer of fine electron dense granulation, without irregular secretory processes. Thick walled sporonts with smooth walls have no electron lucent layer between the wall and the plasmalemma. The cytoplasm is a dense granulated mass without distinct nucleus, visible only as a confluent vacuolated system in the centre. Internal structure were destroyed during the Bouin's fixation in 1958. Spores 2.2-2.5 x 1.4-1.6 m ; are oval to pyriform, with deformations and compressions from fixation. On the surface of the spore are indistinct plasmalemma, thick electron lucent endospore and thin electron dense exospore. In the centre are two electron dense nuclei. The ribosomal system and the Golgi system are indistinct. The polar sac encloses the polaroplast with irregular remains of its structure. The coiled part of the filament is anisofilar, has 6 broader and 3 narrow cross-sections. In the group of normal spores on its perifery are some larger spores, usually 1 in 30, with all structures equal to normal spores, but with up to 13 turns of polar filament. Visceral fat produces an array of hormones involved in energy homeostasis, the fibrinolytic system, the immune system, vascular homeostasis, and the inflammatory response. This multifunctional endocrine paracrine organ has been the focus of many excellent reviews, for example 128-131 ; , and only a few highlights will be considered here. Recent interest has been sparked, in part, by the observation that increased visceral adiposity is closely associated with insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease 21 and emsam. Ian Crombie, Gary Morrison, Michael Cheung, Kevin Woulfe; front ; Helias Katholos, Lewis Marasco - in front of the McCluskey's Pool Hall sign in Spondon, Derby. Thursday had done - beer and pool! An 11am start on Saturday for the team event followed as we clashed with Gloucestershire, Warwick 3rd seeds ; and East Anglia. On arrival, we were told UEA had failed to turn up for their first match, forfeiting 6-0 to Warwick as a result. It was a blow as we approached the Gloucestershire game. A slow start saw us go Angolan refugees caused by the stop-start civil war since independence from its Portuguese masters in 1975 ; , elsewhere in Europe with exAjax and now Hertha Berlin striker Nando Rafael a real possibility of being included. Rafael had his asylum rejected by the Dutch authorities despite living there with his family from early childhood and thus had his contract terminated, which in turn lead to him being granted asylum in Germany on signing his contract with his current club however Angola has lost out on many promising youngsters of Angolan birth or parentage who have opted to represent their country of safety having assimilated into the culture, such as Bordeaux youngster Rio Mvumba who was born in a boat at sea to an Angolan woman escaping the escalating civil war. Much of the squad plays in their homeland with the exception of those playing in the lower quickly 3-0 down as Lewis, Michael and Gary lost out Ian Crombie was up to the task though with a confident performance in cutting the deficit. Helias was unlucky not to make it 3-2, and the match slipped away with a 16 defeat. It meant we needed points from Warwick to have a chance of qualifying for the Sunday, and Gary's first Portuguese leagues, while their most high profile players are the front pairing of Pedro Mantorras who plays for Benifca and Fabrice Akwa who plays in the Middle East with Qatar SC. The most important game in the group for the Angolan side is against Portugal with the potential hope of repeating Senegal's exploits in 2002. However it is unlikely that the side will make any sort of impact with a 4th place finish likely despite this being one of the so called weaker groups. Portugal - Often referred to and revered as the European Brazilians for some inexplicable reason, as so often they have failed to match or even come close to the show and success of their South American originals, despite the presence of Brazilian manager and World Cup winner Luiz Felipe Scolari along with Brazilian born playmaker Deco. The Portuguese side is one in transition, and this has led to more domestic based players being integrated into the squad in order to mould a side for future World Cups and European championships. The big stars are of course the aforementioned Deco, a newly out of retirement Luis Figo, Valencia's flying full back Miguel and.
TM 9-1300-214 6 ; Ednatols. a ; Ednatols are mixtures of haleite ethylene dinitramine ; and TNT. The most used haleite TNT portions are 60 40, 55 and 50 Ednatols are yellowish, uniform blends with a melting point of 80 The eutectic temperature is about 80 C. C. extrudation test at 65 there was no extrudate. C Ednatols are considered satisfactory for bursting charges in ammunition. All of the following data in the discussion of the properties of ednatol refer to the 55 45 mixture. 55 45 Ednatol has an oxygen balance to carbon dioxide of -51 percent and to carbon monoxide of - 17 percent. The density of the cast explosive is 1.62 grams per cubic centimeter, which is four percent greater than that of cast TNT or haleite pressed under 206, 850 kilopascals 30, 000 pounds per square inch ; . b ; Ednatol is. manufactured by heating TNT to about 105 in a steam jacketed melting kettle equipped with a stirrer. Wet haleite is added slowly with agitation to the molten TNT. After the haleite has been added, heating and stirring are continued until all the moisture has been driven off. The mixture is then cooled to about 85 while being C agitated, and loaded by pouring. Like TNT, ednatol undergoes some contraction in volume upon solidification. c ; The sensitivity of ednatol, 95 centimeters with a two kilogram weight, is between the sensitivity of haleite and TNT. Ednatol is unaffected by either the steel or fiber shoe in the pendulum friction test. The rifle bullet impact test produces ignitions in seven percent of the trials with no detonations. The explosion temperature test value, 190 is the same as C, for haleite. This value is lower than the values for all of the other noninitiating high explosives. As might be expected, ednatol is more sensitive than TNT but less sensitive than haleite to initiation. The minimum detonating charge of mercury fulminate is 0.22 grams to 0.23 grams. In the booster sensitivity test using a 100 gram tetryl pellet, the 50 percent detonation point with acrawax B was 325 centimeters 1.28 inches ; . d ; The sand test indicates ednatol is 112 percent as brisant as TNT. The plate dent test also indicates a brisance of 112 percent of TNT. The fragmentation test indicates a brisance of 118 percent of TNT, with fragment velocities of 832 kilometers per second at 2.74 meters and 741 kilometers per second at 7.77 meters. The velocity of detonation for a one inch diameter, unconfined, cast charge is 7, 340 meters per second, 106 percent of TNT. As measured by the ballistic pendulum test and the Trauzl test, ednatol is 119 percent and 120 percent as powerful as TNT. e ; In the 100 heat test, a loss of 0.2 C percent is reported in the first 48 hours and 0.1 percent in the second 48 hours with no explosions in 100 hours. In the vacuum stability test at 100 one cubic C centimeter of gas is evolved and at 120 more than 11 C cubic centimeters of gas are evolved. Dry ednatol has no effect on brass, aluminum, steels, cadmium, and nickel but causes very slight corrosion of copper, magnesium, and aluminum-magnesium alloys. Wet ednatol has no effect on stainless steel, but causes slight corrosion of aluminum and considerable corrosion of copper, brass, magnesium, magnesium-aluminum alloys, and mild steels. Ednatols are essentially nonhygroscopic when exposed to humid air. f ; In an air blast the peak pressure is 108 percent of TNT, the impulse is 110 percent of TNT, and the energy is 108 percent of TNT. In an underwater blast, the energy is 113 percent of TNT. The shaped charge effectiveness is about 120 percent of TNT. g ; The composition of ednatols can be determined by extracting a weighed sample with cold ether saturated with haleite and drying and weighing the residue. The weight of residue and loss in weight are calculated to percent of haleite and TNT, respectively. 7 ; LX-14. a ; LX-14 is an explosive which consists of 95.5 percent HMX and 4.5 percent estane 5702-F1. The mixture is a white solid with violet spots. LX-14 has a theoretical maximum density of 1.849 grams per cubic centimeter, a nominal density of 1.83 grams per cubic centimeter, and a melting point of greater than 270 with decomposition. The heat of C, formation is 1.50 kilocalories per mole. The calculated heats of detonation are 1.58 kilocalories per gram with liquid water and 1.43 kilocalories per gram with gaseous water. At a density of 1.835 grams per cubic centimeter the detonation velocity is 8, 830 meters per second. b ; As shown in figure 8-85, LX-14 is moderately easy to ignite in the Susan test, requiring an impact velocity of about 48 meters per second. Nosecap deformation is generally greater than 25 millimeters before ignition is observed. Reaction levels are large and somewhat erratic once the threshold velocity is exceeded. This data indicates that accidental, mechanical ignition of LX-14 has a moderately low probability of building into a violent reaction or detonation where there is little or no confinement. Figure 8-86 shows the DTA curve for LX14 and pamelor.
Children are of particular concern. Compared to asthmatics at healthy weights, obese kids with asthma have more severe symptoms and are more likely to still have the disease as adults, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. And obese girls who don't have asthma are more likely to develop it as adults. This month's European Respiratory Journal reports that compared with the thinnest 25 percent of 7-year-olds, the heaviest 25 percent were nearly four times as likely to have asthma by age 32. "If you're treating someone with asthma, " Fink said, "weight has to be part of the equation." -- WHAT DOCTORS CAN DO Even as an asthma educator with asthma, Pam Reichel was shocked at something she learned in a recent seminar. "Mortality rates are the same for both mild and severe asthmatics, " she said. But the more she thought about it, the more sense it made. "Severe asthmatics are under medical care, and mild asthmatics don't realize they should be, so even though they don't get as many attacks, they're more likely to die from the ones they get." Fewer than 10 percent of those with mild, persistent asthma use control drugs every day, the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine reported last August, compared to 80 percent of those with moderate or severe cases. Asthma doctors not only give patients the right doses of the right drugs, they adjust them to the everchanging disease and even can predict when some people's risk of attack goes up or down. "If you're over age 4 or 5, pulmonary-function tests will pick up drops in lung function before you have an attack, " said Dr. Robert Fink, who directs pulmonary medicine at Children's Medical Center. Newer biochemical tests look for substances that increase with a person's level of inflammation. They analyze either exhaled nitric acid or coughed-up lung fluid, alerting doctors that "we need to increase medications, " Fink said. Changes in the calendar, weather or air pollution also can affect some people's risk of an attack. Besides exposure to cigarette smoke, Fink said the leading contributors to asthma appear to be "environmental pollution and allergies." Many allergies come and go with the seasons. Specialists can test for them, then prescribe drugs and other precautions not only for seasonal allergies, but for avoiding allergens in food or animals. Different people's asthma symptoms can flare up with cold weather, which constricts airways; wet weather, which promotes mold growth; dry and windy weather, which disperses pollen; hot and humid air, or barometric changes that cause severe storms or sudden weather changes. Asthma attacks are more likely with low temperature, heavy rain and persistent rain, Environmental Research reported last month, with women particularly sensitive.
